Major Merill Powers on the Today Show!

Get ready to pull out the tissues! A few days ago, Major Nancy Powers (Program Development Officer at the Freedom Center) surprised her husband in a huge way. Her husband, Major Merrill, thought they were throwing one of their delicious BBQ open houses for the neighborhood. In reality, the get together was to honor him and his life of service to the broken. The surprise included visits from Hoda from the Today Show, and chef Bobby Flay – one of his heroes – and much more.

After watching that, you have to ask yourself. No matter where you are in life, are you living for the glory of God and the service of others?

Rio 2016 Recap Video

During the Rio Olympics, the Central Territory sent a missions team down to run VBS’s, build relationships, and spread the Gospel. Since the team has been state side, someone created a recap video, and it’s a good 5 minute watch. You’ll recognize some friendly faces from Metro, and see the other teams that were sent from New Zeeland, Australia, and Canada. Enjoy!

See You At The Pole 2016

For the last 25 years, See You at the Pole has been about one simple act—prayer. SYATP is still about students uniting themselves in prayer before God interceding for their generation.

There are two opportunities to unite in prayer with your friends:

  • DAY: SEE YOU AT THE POLE day is on Wednesday, September 28, at 7:00 a.m. local time. All around the globe, in every time zone, students will be gathering at their flagpoles, praying for their school, friends, families, churches, and communities. SEE YOU AT THE POLE is a day committed to global unity in Christ and prayer for your generation.
  • WEEK: The GLOBAL WEEK OF STUDENT PRAYER (Sunday, September 25 through Saturday, October 1) encourages students to find new and unique ways, places, and times to pray throughout the week. Whether you attend PUBLIC SCHOOL, PRIVATE SCHOOL, or HOME SCHOOL, gather your friends wherever and whenever and pray! The GLOBAL WEEK OF STUDENT PRAYER is dedicated to prayer and launching your on-campus Bible clubs, prayer strategies, and student ministries.

See You at the Pole™, the global day of student prayer, began in 1990 as a grass roots movement with ten students praying at their school. Twenty years later, millions pray on their campuses on the fourth Wednesday in September.

See You at the Pole™ is simply a prayer rally where students meet at the school flagpole before school to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation to God. See You at the Pole™ is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led event.

For those of you who may not have heard, for the first time in 14 years, we have received a record low number of student applications for Band of Survivors.  As a result, we have cancelled this summer’s team.  We released a statement to Corps Officers and Youth Leaders yesterday about this which you can read below.  We’re excited about what God will do in our new venture this summer, and are looking forward to Band of Survivors 2017.

Territorial Graduate Corps Cadet Scholarship

We are pleased to share this year’s Territorial Graduate Corps Cadet Scholarship Application. Please note that this application should be sent directly to the Territorial Youth Department (with a copy to us, the Metro Divisional Youth Department), and the deadline is August 15.

To be eligible for the Territorial Graduate Corps Cadet (Post High School Education) Scholarship, the applicant must meet the following conditions:

  1. Be a graduate Corps Cadet of the U.S.A. Central Territory, completing 5 years/10 courses. Official records will be verified at territorial headquarters.
  2. Be an active senior soldier in good standing from the Central Territory. An active senior soldier in good standing means that the student is regularly attending and is involved in a local corps and adhering to the Soldier’s Covenant.
  3. Attend a Salvation Army Corps during the time of the scholarship if a corps is located near the institution of their choice. If a corps is not near the school, they must be attending a local church.
  4. Be a full time student in an accredited institution of higher education.
  5. Be under the age of 26.
  6. Submit a new application for each academic year.
  7. Submit a copy of the acceptance letter or copy of class registration from the institution.
  8. Submit an official copy of their complete transcript from the previous year when applying for second, third, or fourth year of post high school education. You must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or higher during the entire school term.

2016 Metro Leadership and Medical Scholarship Apps

Once again, the Metropolitan Division is delighted to be able to financially support a limited number of college students who are actively involved in corps programming and exhibit leadership potential through our Metro Leadership and Metro Medical Scholarships. One important change on the application is that we will no longer be requiring financial information from each applicant, such as FASFA. If you have any questions regarding this change, please let us know.

The Metro Leadership Scholarship is designed to provide educational funds for Salvation Army soldiers of the Metropolitan Division. Scholarships are available for studies of all undergraduate work, and master’s level graduate work. Scholarships will be awarded by the Metropolitan Scholarship Committee by September 2016.

Applicants must: 

  • Be a soldier of a Metropolitan Corps. 
  • Be an actively involved in Corps and/or community leadership or volunteer service. 
  • Be a full time undergraduate/graduate student at an accredited college/university (details above). 
  • Maintain a minimum undergraduate (C+) 2.5 G.P.A. or a minimum graduate (B) 3.0 G.P.A. in order to be considered for subsequent scholarship awards.

The Metro Medical Scholarship program is designed to provide educational funds for Salvation Army soldiers of the Metropolitan Division who are involved in an accredited college medical program. Scholarships are available for studies of all undergraduate and master’s level graduate medical studies. Scholarships will be awarded by the Metropolitan Scholarship Committee by September 2016.

Applicants must: 

  • Be a soldier of a Metropolitan Corps. 
  • Be an actively involved in Corps and/or community leadership or volunteer service. 
  • Be a full time undergraduate/graduate student at an accredited college/university (details above). 
  • Be actively pursuing a degree related to the medical field.
