On Saturday, October 7, The Salvation Army, along with a host of dignitaries and community leaders, dedicated its newest building, the Adele and Robert Stern Red Shield Center in the heart of the Englewood community.

Mayor Richard M. Daley was among the special guests who joined Lt. Colonel David E. Grindle, divisional commander for The Salvation Army’s Metropolitan Division, on the program. Other guests included Latasha R. Thomas, Alderman, 17th Ward; Commissioners Ken and Joy Baillie, territorial leaders for The Salvation Army’s Central Territory; Captains Charles and Carol Williams, The Salvation Army officers assigned to the Englewood Corps Campus Complex; and Clifford Perry, Senior Vice President, Community Development for Fifth Third Bank, who presented a check in the amount of $25,000 to the Williams’ for the Center’s music program.

The 70,000 square-foot facility includes a fitness center; an 8,000 square-foot gymnasium; a 203-seat auditorium equipped with a fully-integrated sound and multi-media system; a fully equipped state-of-the-art kitchen; and several meeting and conference rooms.

“We are extremely proud of this building,” says Lt. Colonel Grindle. “There is no place like it anywhere in the city. It’s here in Englewood, and we want families to use the Center and enjoy the activities and programs.”

A variety of programs are currently offered at the Center, including educational programs, performing arts such as drama, dance and music, health and recreational activities, sports leagues and tournaments, and childcare and after-school programs.
